Many organisations buy a SIEM expecting security monitoring, and discover months later that nobody is watching it. Understanding the difference between SIEM and SOC is the first step to getting monitoring that works.
SIEM is a platform
Security Information and Event Management software collects logs from firewalls, servers, endpoints, applications and cloud services, normalises them, correlates related events and raises alerts. Modern platforms add user behaviour analytics (UEBA) and automated response (SOAR).
A SIEM on its own does not investigate anything. It produces alerts.
SOC is a capability
A Security Operations Centre is the people, processes and technology that monitor for threats, investigate alerts and respond to incidents. A functioning SOC needs:
- Analysts at different tiers, from triage to investigation
- Coverage across the hours you need, which means shifts or on-call rotas
- Documented procedures for triage, escalation, incident response and shift handover
- Detection rules tuned to your environment, reviewed regularly
- Metrics such as time to detect and time to respond
Build, buy or hybrid
| Model | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| In-house SOC | Large organisations, regulated entities with mandates for on-premise SOCs | Highest cost, hiring and retention challenges, full control |
| Managed SOC | Mid-sized organisations wanting monitoring without building a team | Lower cost, shared analysts, less customisation |
| Hybrid | Organisations with some internal security staff | Internal team owns response, provider covers monitoring and after-hours |
Questions to ask any provider
- Which hours do analysts actively monitor, and what happens outside them?
- Which log sources are included, and how is volume priced?
- How are detection rules created and tuned for my environment?
- What are the escalation SLAs by severity?
- Who can take containment actions, and with what approval?
- What reports will I receive, and how often?
Honest answers to these questions separate real monitoring from a dashboard and a promise. See how we approach SIEM implementation and how we build and support SOCs inside client organisations.
